Chefs Euro Road Trip
20,000 kms, through 36 countries over 75 days on a budget of €4500.00….. One man and his van.
This the first of my road trips began from Dublin on the 22nd of Arpil 2009. Got a ferry from Rosslare, Co. Wexford to Cherbourg, France before heading south to start my circle of Europe, arriving back to Roscoff to catch ferry back to Ireland, landing back in Dublin on the 5th of July.
After diesel, insurance, visas, driving permit, road taxes, ferries and some set up costs, I was left to live on €7.00 per day for food and drinks. So this was the challenge I set out for myself…. To drive through 36 European countries, approx. 86 cities over 75 days using my Toyota Hiace van as my only means of transport and accommodation (apart from ferries).
It was an experience I will never forget for all sorts of reasons I consider myself very lucky to have seen all I have in one Mamet trip and capture It through photography (one of my passions). I learnt so much about myself and used the time to figure out all that was swirling around in my head. To see first hand the different landscapes, cultures and people of Europe and learn that we are not very different from each other. I feel as someone coming from Ireland, a piece of land on western tip of the continent t surrounded by water, that we are clearly very detached from what’s happening on mainland Europe. But the other side of the coin is, we have such a diverse and beautiful landscape for such a small island. As someone who loves to travel and see new places and experience different ways of living, I have clearly got the bug for more.
